Is professional teeth whitening safe?
By Make Me Smile Dental Health Centre, Shastri Nagar Lane 2, Andheri West · Updated 1 October 2026
The short answer
Yes. Professional whitening done under a dentist’s supervision is safe for healthy teeth and doesn’t damage enamel. Temporary sensitivity for a day or two is common. Whitening only works on natural teeth, not crowns, veneers or fillings, so a check-up first matters.
Whitening is one of the quickest ways to refresh a smile, and done properly, one of the safest.
Why professional whitening is different
- The right strength: gels are stronger than shop kits but used in a controlled way.
- Your gums are protected throughout.
- A check-up comes first, because whitening over a cavity or exposed root can be very uncomfortable.
What to expect
- Shade recorded before you start, so you can see the change
- About an hour in the clinic, or custom trays to use at home
- Possible sensitivity for a day or two, which passes
- Teeth several shades lighter
Making it last
- Go easy on tea, coffee, red wine and turmeric for 48 hours afterwards
- Rinse with water after staining food and drinks
- Keep up six-monthly cleanings
If you have visible crowns or fillings, they won’t change colour, so we’ll plan around them. Sometimes whitening is one part of a wider smile design.
