Implant, bridge or denture. What’s the best way to replace a missing tooth?

By Make Me Smile Dental Health Centre, Shastri Nagar Lane 2, Andheri West · Updated 1 October 2026

The short answer

An implant replaces the root and the tooth without touching neighbouring teeth, and is usually the longest-lasting option. A bridge is quicker and avoids surgery but involves shaping the teeth on either side. A denture is removable, the least invasive, and can replace many teeth at once. The right choice depends on your gums, bone, neighbouring teeth, health and budget.

Losing a tooth affects how you chew, how your other teeth sit, and often how you feel about smiling. There are three main ways to replace it.

Side by side

Dental implant Bridge Denture
What it is Titanium root plus a crown A false tooth held by crowns on the neighbouring teeth A removable plate with teeth
Fixed or removable Fixed Fixed Removable (or clips onto implants)
Affects other teeth No Yes, neighbours are shaped for crowns Partial dentures clip onto neighbours
Surgery Minor, under local anaesthetic No No
Typical timeline 3–6 months 2 visits over 1–2 weeks 4–5 visits over a few weeks
Protects jawbone Yes No No (unless implant-supported)
Lifespan Many years with good care Many years Several years, with relines

When each makes sense

  • Implant: one or a few missing teeth, healthy gums, enough bone (or bone that can be grafted), and you want something that feels like your own tooth.
  • Bridge: the teeth either side already need crowns, you’d prefer to avoid surgery, or you need a quicker result.
  • Denture: several or all teeth are missing, or a less invasive option suits your health or budget. Implant-supported dentures combine the stability of implants with the coverage of a denture.

How we help you decide

Dr. Vaishali, who holds a postgraduate certification in implantology, will examine your mouth, check the bone with an X-ray or scan, and walk you through the options that genuinely suit you, including what each will cost, before you decide. Book a consultation in Shastri Nagar, Andheri Lokhandwala. We’re open every day, including Sundays.

More questions

Is it OK to leave a gap?

Sometimes, especially right at the back. But neighbouring teeth can tilt into the gap, the opposite tooth can over-erupt, and the jawbone slowly shrinks where a tooth is missing. It’s worth discussing before deciding.

Am I too old for an implant?

Age alone isn’t a barrier. General health and the bone available matter more. Many patients in their sixties and seventies have implants.
